An Athena Soccer tradition is to have a wild, wacky Halloween practice. The idea is that each class comes up with a costume, which has to be creative and essentially handmade. It is unacceptable to just buy Superman costumes from a Halloween store. We take this very seriously and our costumes are a surprise until the actual practice.
This year the freshmen were crayons made from cardboard boxes sprayed different colors - a decent costume for their first time. The sophomores were Tetris pieces. The juniors relieved themselves from a history of sub-par costumes and came out as the solar system, complete with hula-hoops covered in painted paper to make a ball around each of them and string to connect them to the sun in the center.
Our senior class has always had some pretty fantastic costumes. There were twelve of us our freshmen year so we were a box of donuts. Sophomore year we were six Coke bottles and two Coke polar bears (check out Coke commercials!). Junior year we each represented a Harry Potter book. This was complete with robes, a thestral, wands, black yarn hair, brooms, glasses and other various items. We ran around in our scrimmage screaming, "pass the ball Harry" in British accents. This year we were a soccer ball. Using cardboard boxes we divided the ball into five sections and spray-painted hexagons and pentagons. Each segment was attached to our backs, with the various pieces at perfect angles. When we came together in a circle we formed a ball. It was great!
This practice is always so much fun and a great team bonding activity. We spend the majority of the time taking pictures and then we scrimmage for fifteen minutes, but it is often hard to run in our costumes. In fact, our coach dressed as Victoria Beckham and played in a short dress and heels! Our practice is truly a sight to see.
Despite all the fun that we have, we have worked really hard this season. We finished regular league play undefeated and are looking to win the SCIAC Tournament and progress into the NCAA Tournament. Go ATHENAS!
