The best advice I could give to an applicant is to be really honest about what you want to get out of your college experience. As a transfer to CMC, I had a great example of what I didn't want to receive from my time spent at my previous college. I decided to take a good amount of time to explore my interests and hone in on what it was that I truly desired to get out of my education and social life. It's essential at this time in your life to think about what it is you want to study, how you would like to study, and the type of environment you would like to be in; this will help you develop an understand as to how CMC can assist you. Additionally, this understanding will translate so much more clearly in conversations with admission officers, students, interviewers, or any professors or coaches you may have contact with. Understanding the ways that you like to work help found an inquisitive nature, from which your application can be catered to this strengthened you. I know that my application reflected so naturally how I had grown as a person and student up until my point of transfer, and I believe that it was the strong sense of self that helped the admissions committee see how I would excel at Claremont McKenna.
Having that sense of drive and recognition of what you desire will set you apart from the other applicants and shows that you are truly a leader in the making. |

The best thing I think CMC does to help transfers is the fact that so many faculty members are available for questions, via the telephone, and not email or a computer. For example, I had a bunch of questions about my credits and I needed definitive answers in the process of weighing my options on weather to attend CMC or not. The registrar and some of her assistants were extremely helpful when speaking with them on the phone. I called during normal business hours, and I did not receive a "leave a message service and someone will get back to you," or a "let me transfer you to someone better" response. I was able to speak with the registrar, Elizabeth Morgan, or one of her assistants immediately. I was in awe that it was that easy. They apparently pulled my file right away when I called and I felt as though I was in High School again dealing with people who already had all the information, which was a good thing. I've attended a large university with over 20,000 students at the University of Connecticut and I've also attended a community college, where in both cases I, myself and most students felt like a number. CMC creates an atmosphere that's welcoming and personable for transfers and all other students.
Also the orientation weekend was helpful. Luckily my dorm floor had half transfers so I started the school year knowing a group of people that were in my position as well. The transfer bbq and the overwhelmingly easy accessibility to getting questions answered via CMC Sponsors was also helpful in smoothing out my process of transferring. |
